Pink Salmon Scarf
I just can’t get enough of scarves! With the cold season at our door, it seems like all I want to do is weave scarves all day on my rigid heddle loom. Today, I’m happy to present you my pink salmon scarf! Its vibrant colors will sure keep the person who wears it warm during the gloomy days.
Warp and Weft
This lovely pink salmon scarf was woven with Loops & Thread yarn on a 15 dpi (60/10) heddle. I used a pick-up stick to make the pattern. Both the warp and the weft were made using the same yarn, they were simply not the same color. The warp was peachy keen, and the weft was tangy coral. The warp had a nice variegated color effect going from pale salmon to plate blue. On the other side, the weft was more of a solid salmon color.
To weave this project, I used my smallest heddle so that the warp threads will be very close to each other. This makes this project mostly warp face, as the warp what we see the most. I did this because I really wanted to see the effect of the variegating colors of the warp yarn.
Then, I only wanted a few “pops” of color in the weft. Since that this scarf was warp predominant, the only way I could really show the weft was by using pick-up sticks. You can see that the weft floats created with the pick-up stick truly stand out.
It’s interesting to look at this pink salmon scarf from both sides. On the first side, you can see the horizontal salmon stripes created by the pick-up stick pattern. Then on the reverse, you see that the floats created vertically by the pick-up stick. On this side, the weft is almost invisible.
The Pattern
The pattern used was retrieved from Jane Patrick’s book “The Weaver’s Idea Book”. It can be found on page 89 and it was both “3/1 lace” and “3/1 lace, variation”. Because this scarf is warp faced, the final effect is quite different than the one in the book. This is a good example of how limitless rigid heddle loom weaving can be! Even while following a pattern, we can make it our own and have a completely different final effect.

Hello! On the 3/1 lace and 3/1 lace variation, did you do the pick up pattern of one then followed by the pick up pattern of the variation?

Hello! I actually did the 3/1 lace for the first and last inches of the scarf. I did the 3/1 lace variation for the “body” of the scarf. If we look closely to the first picture, we can see that the salmon stripes at the beginning of the scarf are thinner then the ones on the rest of the scarf. This is also visible on the second to last picture. There, we can see two repeats of the 3/1 lace and the rest is 3/1 lace variation. I hope this helps 🙂
