The Series of Weaving 4 Scarves on my Dorothy Loom-Part 2

In this video, I take you with me as I weave the second scarf of the series of weaving 4 scarves on my Dorothy Loom. So far, the first scarf is already woven. If you wish to learn more about the warp pattern of this whole series or about the weaving of this first scarf, click here. This time, I start the video full of hope and I quickly realized that I had messed up when I tried to do the transition between scarf number 1 and scarf number 2. Still, there is always a solution and the second scarf got woven! Here’s some details about the weaving of this scarf.

The Theme

For the first scarf of the series, I went the traditional way and I wove plaid. For the next two scarves, so scarf number 2 and scarf number 3, I wanted to do something different. I was really inspired by a day and night theme. So, scarf number 2 will be woven under the theme “day”, and scarf number 3 will be woven under the theme “night”.

The Weft Yarn

From now on, I will solely focus on scarf number 2. For the weft, I decided on a wool made of 50% merino and 50% Tencel. I believe this will blend very nicely with my Tencel warp. Since the theme of this scarf is “day”, I really wanted to bright lightness to it. This is why the wool color is “naturel” which is basically white. In the warp, I have a lot of darker colors and I wish to light it up with this white yarn.

The Weft Pattern

I also wish to bring lightness to the scarf with the weft draft. As always, I base myself on Anne Dixon’s book The Handweaver’s Pattern Directory. I decided on the pattern that can be found on the middle of page 32. This pattern makes littles zig-zags that reminds me of sun rays. It’s also a relatively easy pattern to follow. First, I can use the exact same setup that I had for the first scarf. The difference in the patterns is created by the sequence on which I push on the treadles. Here, I go 1-2-3-4-3-2. In other words, I go all the way through the treadles and I come back! I repeated this sequence all the way through the scarf.

Finishing off the Scarf

I also made sure to hemstitch the beginning and the end of the scarf. I did bundles of 4 warp threads and 2 weft threads.

In my next video, I will be weaving scarf number 3 which is under the theme “night”. In my final video, I will be weaving scarf number 4 and revealing all the finished scarves. Stay tuned! For today, I leave you with this picture of the day scarf while it was “sunbathing”.
